 THE ATLANTIS DIRECTORY

An alphabetized but by no means inclusive list of people who have been involved with the Atlantis Project, in planning, administration or consultation. It indicates the wide range of Atlantis associates. An updated and somewhat augmented list is in preparation.

Prof. Warwick Armstrong

Professor of Geography at McGill with wide experience in Third Worlddevelopment, and Associate Coordinator of the Atlantis Project, Dr. Armstrong is contributing actively to its evolution and consolidation.

Christina Ayer

Ms. Ayer has tutorial experience as undergraduate. TA in English, 200-1. A student of English Literature, she is a long-time activist and consultant on the organization of the project.

Prof. Roger Bennett

Assoc. Dean of Management (B. Comm. program), Prof. Bennett has advised on the project and has suggested the formation of a committee to discuss possibilities of Atlantis type instruction within McGill.

Dr. Baruch Blumberg

Master of Balliol College, OxfordConsultant to the Atlantis Project, Dr. Blumberg has offered the advice and suport of Balliol College in initiating an Atlantis residence college.

Dr. Roger Buckland

Vice-Principal, MacDonald College. Dr. Buckland has raised the possibility of an Atlantis-type college on McGill’s MacDonald Campus.

Dr. Lynn Burton

Dept. of Fish. & Oceans, Ottawa. Ottawa coordinator for the project, Dr. Burton has written an important commentary, as well as an “executive summary” of the plan, and has expressed an interest in taking a teaching/executive role in Atlantis. She is at present acting as the Executive Coordinator of the Task Force on Incomes and Adjustment in the Atlantic Fishery and was recently Director of Environmental Education, Environment Canada. Glenn Bydwell

Architect and film director, McGill graduate, he is interested in developing plans for a residence college, and in advising on education appropriate to contemporary professional life.

Prof. Alain Chanlat

Dr. Patrick Dias
Dept. of Curriculum & Instruction, Fac. of Education, McGill.Tel: 398-6960 With extensive experience in curriculum reform and small-groupteaching, Dr. Dias will be contributing to our tutorial text. He has had particular success in teaching small- group methods to high-school teachers.

Prof. Janet Donald

Former Director, Centre for University Teaching and Learning, McGill, Dr. Donald has advised on the development and administration of the Atlantis project since its inception.

Prof. Marsha Durham

University of Western Sydney writes: “The Deputy CEO at University of Western Sydney, Nepean, Prof. Alex Robertson, recently distributed to all of the Deans your article ‘Teaching in Universities: What is to be done?’ I would appreciate further details.” As faculty representative on the Working Party for Academic Excellence, “I will be able to disseminate the Atlantis information more widely within the university.”

Prof. Eric Einhorn

Chairman, Dept. of Political Science University of Massachusets,Amherst, has sent for “additional descriptive material” on Atlantis. Has opened discussion of teaching hours in an Atlantis program.

J. Nicholas Elam

Head of Cultural Relations Department in London, Mr. Elam has shown strong interest in the Atlantis project. In his role of overseeing governmental scholarlarships to foreign students, he has found that the demand for places in universities with tutorial instruction immensely exceeds the supply. Therefore, he is anxious to support the Atlantis program as it offers the opportunity for widespread tutorial instruction without the high cost of such instruction at Oxbridge.

Daniel Engelberg

Daniel Engelberg is a human-computer interaction specialist at the Computer Research Institute of Montreal. He is also the founder of an interdisciplinary interest group and think-tank on the design of human environments. His background is in psychology and human factors.

Prof. Alan Fenichel

Dept. of Economics, McGill  Dr.Fenichel participated in The McGill Experimental Summer College (ESCMU) as a tutor, is consulting on the project, and has expressed interest in participating in Atlantis.

John Forster

Centre for Teaching and Learning University of Aberdeen, has requested information on Atlantis.

Peter Fullerton

Magdalen College, Oxford, OX1 4AU Development Officer at Magdalen, Peter has been a longtime friend of Atlantis and has advised particularly on college design and layout.

Prof. Scot Gardiner

CONCORDIA.CA LS Dept. of Communications, Concordia (Loyola), Montreal.Dr. W.L. Gardiner is the author of The Psychology of Education, and The Ubiquitous Chip, and is a specialist in the use of visual media in education. He is widely travelled, and has many important contacts in the field of AV educ. Dr. Gardiner has expressed strong support for the project from the beginning and is a potential tutor, and adviser on media options.

Prof. Marc Gervais SJ

Dept. of Communications, Concordia (Loyola), Montreal Loyola Peace Institute Dr. Gervais is an internationally known film critic and founder chairman of the Loyola Peace Institute who has expressed strong interest in participating in Atlantis.

Daniel Godin

A graduate of McGill’s English department (1989), a McConnellFellow with numerous scholarships, Mr. Godin is now the director of the Academie Linguistique de Montreal. He is an active supporter of Atlantis and a potential director of the Atlantis programme for bilingual tutorials.

Gerald Grant

School of Education U. of Syracuse
Director of The Cultural Foundations of Education Project, Prof. Grant wrote the definitive text, The Perpetual Dream: Reform and Experiment in the American College. He has been a strong supporter of the project since the beginning and hasagreed to contribute to the proposed Atlantis text “From Ancient Colloquy to Modern Encounter: The Tutorial Reborn”

Prof. Andrew Hamnett

Office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor University of NewcastleNewcastel-upon-Tyne writes: “. . . you have clearly wrestled with these problems [of incorporating small group teaching into conventional curricula] and arrived at a possible solution. I would be intrigued to know more . . . ”

Anne Henderson

Ms. Henderson was a major organizer of, and a student administrator/participant, in the McGill Experimental Summer College of 1969. She is an independent film director, has directed “Song of Tibet” for NFB (Studio B) which was shown on CBC and nominated for an award. She is working with Gwynne Dyer on a television series on Patriarchy. She has expressed interest in taking on an Atlantis tutorial in a research capacity.

Prof. Ian Henderson

On the faculty of Religious Studies at McGill, Dr. Henderson has consulted for and is possible participant in Atlantis, particularly as a summer program.

Dr. Fumiko Ikawa-Smith

Vice-President, Academic. Atlantis has reported to her and has benefited by her guidance.

Joan Kahn

Dr. Kahn has worked with the Centre for Medicine, Ethics, and Law at McGill and is advising Atlantis re current work on generating more humane relationships between employee and institution, as developed in the procedures of such groups as Socio-Technical Systems and Total Quality Management.

Don Kingsbury

A former instructor known for teaching innovations in the mathematics department at McGill, Mr. Kingsbury is now a well-known science-fiction writer (Courtship Rite, etc). He is a supporter of Atlantis and is interested in working with a professional tutorial on a scifi project.

Eric Stephan Kline

Mr. Kline participated in the Berkeley and ESCMU tutorials. He is an L.A. representative for Atlantis, and teaches drama at Tony Barr's Film Actors Workshop.

B.W. Imrie

College of Higher Vocational Studies City University of HongKong Request for further details of the project has led to a lively and continuing exchange of ideas and information.

Prof. Ellen James

An instructor of graduate students in art history at Concordia, Professor James has also had experience in arranging art and architectural exhibitions.

Richard Johnston

Chair, Ontario Council of Regents Mr Johnston has reviewed the proposals very positively and will keep in touch with the progress of the project.

Phyllis Lambert

Dr. Lambert is Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture; she has suggested a CCA exhibition on the evolutions of college architecture, emphasising the interrelations of external space and internal mindstates, with particular reference to the polar assertions of institutional authority and individual autonomy.

George Leonard

Mr. Leonard is the author of the acclaimed visionary tome Education and Ecstacy. He is also written on the role of sport in education in The Ultimate Athlete and is a potential contributor to the proposed text on tutorials.

Prof. Bill MacPherson

Holland College, Director of Learning Support Services, Bill MacPherson supervises Holland College’s “Competency Based Learning,” in which responsibility for learning is primarily with the student. Instead of the conventional teacher – student relationship, the staff function as “Learning Managers” whose role is to facilitate rather than control the learning process. We look forward to strengthening contacts with Holland, whose program seems remarkably close to the concepts developed by Atlantis.

George Marshal

Former President of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Montreal, businessman, financial consultant, and long-time adviser and friend to Atlantis.

Dr. George Marshall

NBD Communications, Bedford, NS. Dr. Marshall was a tutor in the McGillSummer College of 1969, and has been a professor of psychology at Concordia. Resources: Application of information technology; use of contemplative and meditative practices in Atlantis College; would be available as tutor and is willing to provide location for projects, field studies or apprenticeships.

All Souls College, Oxford Historian of Oxf. Univ. who has agreed to consider a contribution on the history of the tutorial to the tutorial volume.

Dr. David Mulhall

Dawson College Dr. Mulhall is the founder and director of the Liberal Arts Program in Dawson, a program that has been taken up by the other English CEGEPs. He is an important consultant on CEGEP programs.

Dr. Saskia Murk Jansen

Cambridge Univ. Development Office Dr. Murk Jansen is a Tutor at Robinson College in Dutch and mystical theology, and an alumni relations officer in the Development Office. She is a strong supporter of the project and is the Cambridge coordinator for the Tutorial Volume.

Prof. Peter Oettli

Dean of HumanitiesUniv. of Waikato PB  Has been developing techniques to train students to respond critically to each other rather than look to the `experts' to provide answers from on high. Several of my colleagues have now modified this approach and perhaps it is time we put our collective experiences on paper.” Also interested in further elucidation of faculty/student ratios, and of cross-cultural tutorials. Queens College, Oxford. Dr. Reed is a longtime consultant to the project. He has published an article on Atlantis for The Oxford Magazine, of which he is editor, and is willing to contribute a chapter to our projected book on the tutorial.

Dr T. Alex Reid

Director, Oxford Univ. Computing Services Banbury  Dr. Reid initiated planning of small-group teaching in the Univerity of Western Australia in early 1990s. He has requested further Atlantis documents and suggested discussions in the form of a “small seminar” next time I can get to Oxford.

Prof. Eric Salin

Prof. Salin, along with his colleague Prof. David Burns, is an active consultant on the possibilities of Atlantis-style instruction in the sciences.

Dr. Richard Smethurst

Worcester College, Oxford.The Provost of Worcester College and Chairman of the O.U. Education Committee, Dr. Smethurst would contribute a chapter on the work of the committee in preparing new faculty for a tutorial role.

Prof. David Smith

Faculty, Dr. Smith has considerable expertise in both the human and administrative aspects of higher education. He has been a long time consultant to and supporter of the project, and has received a McGill Royal Bank grant for setting up an Atlantis style tutorial. His report very significant report on this tutorial appears elsewhere on this website.

Dr. Stuart Smith

Chairman of the Commission on Post-secondary Education in Canada, Mr. Smith is a longtime consultant to the project and has offered assistance in securing administrative and financial support.

Prof. T. Symons

Trent University Internationally known scholar and university administrator, Professor Symons was the founder and first President of Trent University. He is willing to advise on the Atlantis Project and is particularly interested in the possibilities of a new university at Peterborough, UK.

Mr. Thomas Thompson

Deputy Campaign Director, McGill Twenty-First Century Fund, Mr Thompson handles contributions (large or small) to the McGill Atlantis Project, and has been a long-time adviser to the project.

Dr. Cynthia Weston

Centre for University Teaching and Learning, McGill University, Dr. Weston has advised Atlantis, particularly on the preparation and editing of Atlantis documents, especially funding applications.

Professor Claudia Whalen

Dept. of Psychology St Thomas Univ. Fredericton. Requested Atlantis documents, which she described as being of "immense help." Is contributing to Listserv discussions.

Prof. M.A. Whitehead

Professor of Chemistry at McGill, Dr. Whitehead is an active consultant for the Atlantis project.

Prof. Paul Wong

Professor of Psychology at Trent, Dr. Wong has been a strong supporter of Atlantis methods. His papers on educational psychology show a deep and humane interest in the response of individual students to their educational experience.
